This position is situated within the School of Community Services, Health and Languages and provides Aboriginal students with a range of culturally relevant front line services. The Indigenous Student Mentor is primarily customer focussed, is required to have confidence in handling issues of a sensitive and confidential nature whilst providing quality service in areas related to study assistance, support networks, and course information. The focus of the role is both internal for Indigenous students and academic staff, as well as external in building networks with Indigenous Community groups, Industry areas and Government agencies.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
Applicants will demonstrate evidence of the following fundamental requirements of this position:

1. Aboriginality (under Section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act) and the ability to liaise & effectively communicate with Aboriginal people

2. Relevant experience in and understanding of the training and education environment.

3. A strong customer focus and the ability to communicate and build positive relationships in a culturally appropriate manner with Indigenous students, staff, Community Groups and Agencies

4. Demonstrated ability to apply high levels of self discipline coupled with excellent organisational and time management skills to manage own workload and competing priorities

5. Proficiency in the use of technology, including email, the internet, Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to use a database
